At New York Fashion Week F/W 2017  Lead Hairstylist, T. Cooper of Metro Look, and her team were sponsored by Sedu and SUDZZfx to create hair influenced by the 90’s for Korean unisex brand, KYE. The presentation took place at the ridiculously trendy V Files space in SoHo. KYE was founded by Central Saint Martins graduate, Kathleen Hanhee Kye, in 2011. KYE features designs focused on rendering wit, humor, and fun, rather than those heavily loaded with trendy details. KYE’s strength lies in its funky yet high-end streetwear vibe combined with the designer’s unique styling aesthetics. The funky streetwear has become a favorite amongst K Pop stars like G-Dragon and CL. Many authoritative press organizations such as VOGUE, MTV, Forbes and Reuters pointed to Kye as an “emerging designer to watch” and “a trailblazer of new fashion trends.”

“Once Kathleen showed me the collection, and let me know that the pieces were highly inspired by the vibrant colors used in 90’s fashion…I knew what I wanted to do right away! There was a really popular braided hairstyle – that I even wore myself in the 90’s, I wanted to put my spin on” says Cooper. The hairstyle was named the “Around the Way Girl” after one of LL Cool J’s old school rap songs. The style incorporates 90’s hip hop inspired, geometrically shaped cornrows in the front of the hair, and messy loose waves in the back. This look was created by making a horizontal center part from ear to ear and pinning up all of the hair in the back. The hair in the front was sectioned into 7 parts (1 straight part in the center and 3 triangle shaped parts on each side) for braiding and Marmalade Jazz was applied to smooth the roots before braiding to keep the sections looking clean. The stylists braided 7 cornrows from the hairline to the section made in the center, and secured each braid with a rubber band. Next, the back section was released, and all unbraided hair was sprayed with SUDZZfx AirPlay. The stylists then began curling the models hair in alternating directions with a Sedu 1” curling Wand. The look was completed by back combing the curls in order to create messy texture, and locking in the style with SUDZZfx AeroFixx spray.
