VERSANI isn’t just Jewelry. Versani is a lifestyle, an experience, a philosophy. Founder and famed jewelry designer ARA has his way to combine strength and beauty into each piece. Established in 1992, Versani began as a contemporary jewelry company.

Nowadays, at Versani you can find innovative combinations of gold and silver with wood, leather, denim, semi-precious stones, and diamonds. Also, there is a wide selection of wedding bands, bracelets, necklaces, rings, cuff links, earrings, and accessories. Our client service is unmatched, a jewelry piece or just a smile, everything you get at Versani comes from the heart.

Versani retail shops are more like treasure chests.

Regularly noted as one of the only places to get amazing jewelry for men and women, today’s SoHo headquarter and on-site production supports Ara’s vision: to bring the magic of Versani jewelry to his clientele around the world.

The Gemstone collection uses a modern technology known as Tension Setting, which portrays the gemstone in its maximum beauty. Versani has mastered the art of preserving the stunning, dazzling quality in the most iridescent stones.

Each collection reflects the juxtaposition that inspires the Versani slogan “Stay Cool Be Strong”.

The Wood collection pairs Bocote, a beautiful, warm, and exotic South-American wood with precise, gleaming platinum, gold, or sterling silver.

The Key Design collection comes directly from the heart of Versani, based on an enchanting keepsake Ara had as a child.

A modern mix of structure and design, elegant, yet profoundly simple

XEX-CLUSIVE VERSANI INTERVIEW

1.- What is Versani?

In one word, Versani is a lifestyle. Bringing out the fun, strength, adventure and uniqueness in your life! Daring to be unique! That’s Versani! Going where most would not.

2.- A man should never wear…

Costume Jewelry. I feel that accessories are a very important and critical part of a man’s wardrobe and not only builds confidence but adds character. A fine designer suit just adds to a man’s saunter, in a similar way so does real jewelry!

3.- A woman should never wear…

Anything else but a smile. I feel that women can wear anything.

4.- What is the source of your inspiration?

I am inspired by a lot of things but I would say nature is my greatest inspiration. I love the unpredictability of nature, it’s richness and abundance of shapes, textures, colors. I love being in nature and my stores and collections reflect this.

5.- Did you always know you were going to design jewelry?

I am innately creative, however I never thought that I would be designing jewelry. It has truly been a blessing to be able to express love and creativity through it.

6.- What will you tell young designers at the challenging beginning of their careers?

Have a strong heart, be persistent, keep moving forward and go out and get it! PERSIST, PERSIST, PERSIST!

7.- New York is…

My Home! A place you definitely need to visit once in your lifetime!

The American dream!

Ever since Stevie Boi launched his line Toxic in 2007, celebrities have embraced the cutting edge eyewear designer. Just a few years after debuting into the fashion industry Stevie Boi’s designs have been worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, Snooki of The Jersey Shore, Michelle Rodriguez, Eva Pigford, Meagan Good, and Lisa Raye. Stevie Boi has also been involved with up and comers such as Teyanna Taylor, Ester Dean, Eletrick Red, and Angel Lola Luv.

Looking at Stevie Boi’s collection it’s clear why these celebrities have flocked to him. Stevie Boi has been the definition of innovation from his first set of shades. Stevie Boi somehow fuses futuristic elements with geometric shapes and patterns in ways that are almost surreal. In an industry where taking risks is expected, Stevie Boi stands out with designs that have even the most daring of fashionistas taking a second glance.

XEX got to sit down with Stevie Boi to figure out the workings of this creative mind.

By: Contributing Editor Adrienne Jordan

Whimsical elegance is the first thing that comes to mind when viewing Canadian designer, Marie Saint Pierre’s recent spring 2010 collection. Her latest collection was inspired by the Spanish painters, Miro and Feito, and in turn created these bold pieces into works of art by using basic black, white, and beige colors as palates with splashes of vibrant color. The wonderful aspect of Saint Pierre’s collection is that she has looks for every age; a woman in her 20’s or 30’s could make a statement in one of her mini-dresses, while a middle-aged woman could wear one of her modern floor-length gowns.

Saint Pierre has over two decades of experience as a fashion designer, and her vision is highlighted by her collection that showcased amazing asymmetrical pieces, super-ruched shirts, viscose jumpsuits, and romantic cocktail dresses. Saint Pierre stated “I liked the idea of taking something traditional and giving it a modern spin”. She definitely hit the mark with her complex silhouettes and use of classic colors: black, white, and beige. My favorite pieces are the harem trousers, paired with a gathered blouse, goddess dress with a gold neckpiece, and crepe dress with metallic gold sleeves.

The collection is perfect for those who prefer neither mundane pieces nor overly avant-garde looks. Marie Saint Pierre presents a perfectly harmonious balance of the two extremes. For example, her asymmetrical taffeta halter dress is modern and edgy, but not too extreme that it becomes difficult to find an occasion to wear it. The same goes for her mixed blazer with matching tailored pants; you could wear the outfit to work or to a dinner party.

The common word that is heard in reference to Saint Pierre’s spring 2010 collection is “3D”. This 3D effect is created by “ultra light materials that are bordered by contrasting bias cut bands that effectively control the fabric”. The architectural construction of her garments allow for this sexy 3D effect without looking weighed down.

Saint-Pierre’s work has a history of acclaim, having been featured in Elle Canada, Elle Quebec, along with having won numerous prestigious awards for her creations. Miles Sacha of the Toronto Star described her creations as being “long, flowing, artfully draped, surreal and romantic. In the words of the French, Saint Pierre’s collection is “très magnifique”! Also, look out for her upcoming fall 2010 collection that features floor-length gowns, cocktail dresses, and ready-to-wear separates.

Coco and Breezy are 19 year old identical twin accessory designers from Minneapolis,Minnesota. Already making a name for themselves on the underground and online fashion scene, the twins have always defined themselves by their collective individuality. Coming from a city not known for its contributions to the fashion world, the twins accidentally feel into designing. After being outcasts for years growing up, they began to rock store bought shades to block themselves from taunting peers. On a whim, they decided to create their own custom eye wear, which created a overnight uproar. Soon the two found themselves being interviewed for blogs around the world.

The twins realized they had something huge on their hands and eventually put up a website. Known for its sharp edginess and attention to detail, Gemela Amor by Coco and Breezy was born. Never being separated for more than 24 hours, they quickly took on the dual responsibilities of running their very own brand. Orders came in from all over the country and the Coco and Breezy mythology spread throughout the digital universe. After running the business for only 3 months, the girls decided that it was time to make the move to New York City. With very little time to prepare, they quit their jobs, sold their car and the decision was made. Armed only with their faith, and with no job or living opportunities in place, the pair bravely made the trip to the fashion capital.

Within days, the twins took the city by storm, literally stopping traffic with their signature styles and confident attitudes. Soon stylists and celebrities all over the city were placing orders and using their frames for photo shoots and appearances. Not satisfied with mere overnight popularity, Coco and Breezy are already preparing themselves for expansion and longevity in the fashion world at large. While making a living strictly from sales, the two are working on their new collection, which will be a reinvention of the infamous styles they are already known for.

With their sights set on the future, the pair are fully aware of the hard work in store. Not tempted by the bright lights and the big city, they are in control of developing what is sure to become a lasting name in style and fashion. Learning as they go, they are never comfortable and constantly challenge themselves to raise the creative bar.
Coco and Breezy represent the new generation of iconoclasts who are redefining youth culture. Totally happy in each others company, they live in a world all their own – We’re just visiting!

Some of Coco & Breezy’s more notable clientele includes Kelly Osbourne, Amber Rose, Sarena Williams,Kelly Rowland, Tila Taquila,Michelle Willams, Gata, Rich Girls, Ashanti, Natalie Nunn, and more

Story by:Stacy Drosatou

For the past twenty years, French designer Philippe Audibert has been creating beautifully designed and exceptionally crafted jewelry. Drawing inspiration from the atmosphere of the Parisian neighborhood of Saine Germain des Pres where he is based, Philippe has been using his artistic background and training as a sculptor to craft his exquisite metal and Swarovski crystal creations.
Capturing attention across the globe, the brand has acquired and ever-growing number of followers throughout the years. His coveted creations have graced the forms of supermodels and celebrities alike, featured on runways, magazine covers (XEX ISSUE2), and red carpets around the world.
As an artist and sculptor, Philippe Audibert believes in creation through constant evolution of fashion and aesthetics. Designed and manufactured exclusively in Paris, Philippe Audibert communicates sophistication and elegance through luxury jewelry of elevated design, material and execution.
Heightening jewelry to the pinnacle of sculptural luxury, Philippe envisions each pieces of his collection not as a mere accessory or accent, but as a original, unique, independent object of art.
With a self-described sporty, independent and intense personality, Philippe is a avid marathon runner and environmentalist who values family above all else. In the future, he plans to expand his design repertoire through the incorporation of a line of fine jewelry.

Philippe Audibert XEXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:

1. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Bordeaux. My family had a house by the beach. I have fond memories of my childhood.

2. What is the source of your inspiration?
People who I see, meet, talk to everyday. I listen to what they have to say, I’m aware of their needs and desires. I don’t design jewelry for myself, that is why I’m attentive to people around me.

3. What is the first piece you ever made, who wore it and do you still have it?
I’ve been designing jewelry for quite a long time now. But there is one thing I do remember very well. About ten years ago, I designed a silver belt for Linda Evangelista. It was unique and she wore it to perfection.

4. Where you exposed to any creative source while growing up?
Not at all. My family is in the wine business. My mum is a philosopher, so I guess we can say she had some kind of an artistic influence on me.

5. What is your favorite season and why?
Summer, without hesitation. My family and I go sailing in Corsica.

6. Where does one have the best Creme Brulee in Paris ?
At Dumonet, rue du Cherche-Midi in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.

7. Fashion Tip for a woman :
Wear black. If you don’t feel too sure or too confident about what you’re wearing, just wear black. You will always look elegant. No fashion faux-pas guaranteed !

8. Fashion Tip for a man:
Wear color ! Men always wear black, as if it was the only option. Stand out ! Wear bright colors !

9. What is next for you and where can we find your work?
We are developping a men’s line. We are always trying to explore new things. In the US, you can find us in many different states and cities. You can find us at Henry Bendel, Bloomingdale’s, Scoop NYC and www.net-a-porter.com to mention a few.

10. Don’t give up your dreams, always remember … to follow your instincts and to stay honest and fair, it’s the key to success.

LONDON – Brilliant and controversial British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, a leading light in the fashion firmament, was found dead in his London home Thursday, his company announced. He was 40 years old. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious. McQueen’s sudden death robbed the fashion scene of one of its most innovative and successful young designers. He made his name first in London, then wooed audiences in Paris, New York and Milan to take his place in the upper echelons of the designing world. His clothes were sexy and distinctive, dramatic and different, perfect for red-carpet presentations and late night rock gatherings. Acclaim and honors came in waves to the talented, bearded man favored by celebrities like Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Naomi Campbell. He was named British Fashion Designer of the Year on four separate occasions.

Despite the accolades, McQueen clung tenaciously to his privacy, turning down most interview requests and shying away from the post-show limelight other designers craved. Known for his dramatic statement pieces and impeccable tailoring, he helped raise the profile of British fashion and was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 when she made him a Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership. His pieces were coveted and treasured by stylish women across the globe. “McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs,” said Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue.

Hal Rubenstein, a fashion director for InStyle magazine said McQueen started out tough and angry — in his work and attitude — but softened over time as he felt more appreciated by the industry. McQueen, he said, was a master of integration of technology into fashion. “He changed the way so many of us see shows.” Vivienne Westwood, perhaps Britain’s most revered designer, said she was “incredibly sorry” to hear of McQueen’s death. Little was immediately known about the circumstances surrounding his death, which came as the fashion elite was gathered in New York for a series of catwalk shows. Recently posted comments on his Twitter page showed signs of anguish over the Feb. 2 death of his mother. He said he wanted his mother to rest in peace and said, “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Using an obscenity, he added that he had had an “awful week” and said he had to “some how pull myself together and finish.”

A presentation of McQueen’s secondary label, McQ, had been scheduled for Thursday’s opening day of New York Fashion Week. McQueen had never been expected at the show, which was quickly canceled. The designer received his early fashion training at the Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design, long recognized for its fashion-forward approach and encouragement of Britain’s talented young designers. He learned the finer points of traditional men’s tailoring at two famous, conservative Savile Row houses: Anderson and Sheppard and also Gieves and Hawkes. “He was 16 when he came here,” said John Hitchcock of Anderson and Sheppard. “He was a boy from Essex, he wanted to learn tailoring. He was a little bit different — he was very ambitious.” He said McQueen’s success had inspired the next generation of designers. After his Savile Row stint, McQueen started to develop his trademark, more theatrical designs, working with several other brands before first starting his own label in 1992. He quickly earned a reputation for innovation that lasted until his death. His last name soon entered the fashion lexicon and become synonymous with new and cutting edge.

The company he founded was purchased by the Gucci Group, and he retained creative control of his own brand. His runway shows — more often like performance pieces because they were so dramatic, and sometimes, bizarre — were always a highlight during the Paris ready-to-wear fashion week. One of his previous collections included a show built around the concept of recycling, with models donning extravagant headwear made out of trash.

His last collection, shown in October in Paris, featured elaborate and highly structured cocktail dresses. Critics raved. His edgy creations have been seen on numerous red carpets, worn by A-list actresses, including Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz. Lady Gaga recently made waves when she wore McQueen’s spring 2010 lobster-claw shoes in her “Bad Romance” music video. McQueen’s death came days before London Fashion Week, an event McQueen had skipped in recent years. ___ Associated Press Writers Raphael G. Satter and Sylvia Hui in London, Jenny Barchfield in Paris and Samantha Critchell in New York contributed to this report.

Story by:Stacy Drosatou

Hernan Lander-s spring 2010 collection conveys effortless elegance to ordinarily casual silhouettes. The earth tones of Africa mixed with the industrialization of the continent serve as a source of inspiration for this season. Hernan is primarily using luxurious jersey materials mostly in grey hues that fall beautifully on the female body incorporating the principles of haute couture. Intricate draping is paying homage to Madame Gres and represents Hernan-s way to interpret the textures of Africa.

Hand-beaded tops, hand-worked jackets, feminine, beautiful skirts and dresses, perfectly tailored pants and red-carpet-worthy gowns, all with embellishments finely crafted to compliment the fabrics and designs, are always a part of the Hernan Lander collection. Zippers play also a big part adding a more structured, industrial touch. Shoes have a very rustic silhouette with oversized wooden platforms and constructed zippers. His ready-to-wear pieces herald the same feminine aesthetic as his couture gowns luring his clientele into the world of beauty, desirability, exclusivity and superb craftsmanship.

“I wanted to counterbalance luxe and simple materials with supper industrial ones to create great silhouettes that are young and polished” says Hernan about his highly coveted collection

BRYAN EL CASTILLO
His process is based on the deconstruction and reconstruction of layers of photographs and painting to create a fractured and emotionally charged image.
Through a technique of collaging photographs on canvas and overpainting, the artist focuses on the identity in an ego-centric culture.

This body of work contemplates the effect of media, television and film on our psyche. The daily barrage of images can infiltrate the perception of one’s own identity, as shown through Bryan’s self-portraits. In a work entitled COINS, Bryan portrays himself in a dreamlike state with coins covering his eyes while holding a television set broadcasting an image of himself in a fetal position.

In another mixed media piece he stands lifeless with wires wrapped around his body, yet no visual understanding of where the strands of wires begin or where they end. The artist explores other individuals and scenes, such as a work entitled Lolita, inspired by the 1952 film by Stanley Kurbrick and adapted from the novel by Nabokov.

Self identity through media reference can develop into individual references. Bryan’s work utilizes references from film, television, painting and print media, sometimes projecting a film noir view. Iconic individuals such as Marilyn Monroe have been exposed in media. The actress is the focus in several paintings, whereby the artist dons a Marilyn wig and places his image side by side with Monroe.

In Bryan’s words: “These paintings are a reference to conscious and unconscious thought stemming from media images or technology which pervade or influence out cognition”.

> BRYAN’S NEW EXHIBIT IS CURRENTLY BEING SHOWN @ THE WESTWOOD GALLERY. NOVEMBER 20th 2009 – JANUARY 9th 2010.

INTERVIEW

1-When & where did you start painting?
I started painting when I was 12 years old, in Colorado.

2-What is bizarre to you and how do you relate it to your work?
I don’t really find anything bizarre, because nothing its really that’s strange it is just a matter of perception.

3-What is the source of your inspiration?
People & how we all as a whole, a society, react to our influences.

4-If you could compare your work to any genre of music, what would it be and why?
I would compare it to classical, instrumental music, because there are no words to describe it. It could be interpreted however you wish, therefore, is more true to yourself and your perception of the truth. The feeling of something should be more important than the words used to describe it.

5-Art is…
Anything that you find important enough to put thought into.

Alexis Bittar incomparable combination of balanced craftsmanship and current street-cred style has taken the concept of jewelry design to an unimaginable new level. His life story creates hope for the ultimate American dream & the simplicity that characterizes his humanity is truly inspiring.
He was born on August 25th, 1968. Originally a curbside vendor, he started selling on the street at the age of 8. From marketing flowers out of a hand-painted cart in Bay Ridge to antique jewelry on Saint Marks. By 1988 he started his own line of jewelry using depression-era glass from the 1920’s with tiny hand-cut chandelier parts and sold them on the corner of Prince & Greene in Soho. Since then, his brilliance continued to expand, selling his designs in Saks Fifth Avenue, designing for Burberry, Tuleh and Michael Kors & since 2001 his collections attract increased attention from the art and fashion worlds. Wholesale accounts expand to more than 500 international and national stores. In 2004, He opened his first store on Broome Street in Soho, 2 blocks away from where it all began.

Today, Bittar is based in Dumbo, where he still designs everything & runs the company’s business side, which includes a staff of around 160. All the brand’s creations are made by hand in the multi-floored studio, in a room of craftspeople who use Bittar’s original (and often unique) techniques, like dotting color on Lucite with methodical fingertip taps.
In an era when leaders are falling and stars are rising, Alexis designs keep breaking the traditional, conventional ways and introduce a new, exquisite approach to accessories. He is with no doubt the greatest and most talented jewelry designer of our time.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1- * What would you tell designers at the Challenging beginning of their careers?
Stick to your guns; I knew that this is what I wanted to do and I never let go of my dream regardless of all the challenges that start ups can bring.
2- * What is the source of your inspiration?
Everything from Grace Jones and the NYC 80’s club scene to the organic elements found in nature, 1960’s Bakelite, the hand craftsmanship found in ancient antiques, and old films….but I need to stay focused…often my biggest problem is that I have too many ideas!
3- * If you were to win the lottery tomorrow & give up designing what would you do?
I could never give up designing. Its my life, it keeps me sane. I have a n incredible team around me and couldn’t be without them. having said that, I would enjoy having more time to travel.
4- * What celebrity (ies) best represents your work & who would you like to see wearing your designs?
I am incredibly fortunate to have a huge celebrity following, from Cameron Diaz to Whitney Houston, Madonna and Alisha keys…they have all been incredibly supportive and loyal to me since the very beginning- I’m very lucky. As for celebrities I would like to see wear my designs- I love Tilda Swinton.
5- * Are your parents creative or were you ever exposed to any creative source growing up?
My parents were both university professors and avid antique collectors. For my 13th birthday, they gave me this massive lot of antique jewelry which sparked my deep fascination with the detailed hand craftsmanship that went into making each piece.
6- * What was the 1st piece you ever made and who wore it? Do you still have it?
The first pieces I ever made were made from Lucite. I created a technique which fused the ideas of turn of the century lalique glass and Bakelite from the 1960’s…. I used to sell them on the street on St Marks and later on Prince Street in Soho. To my surprise, they all sold right away and pretty soon, I had to hire some people to help me in order to keep up with the demand—we hand carved each piece in the bedroom of my tiny apartment. Today I have about 160 employees but the process is the same- every piece is hand-carved right here in our Brooklyn studios. So unfortunately No I don’t still have the first piece, I’m sure it has a nice home.
7- * What is your favorite season, why?
Fall is always fun, people tend to want to wear statement pieces during the festive season, they dress up and adorn themselves for all the holiday parties.this allows me to be extra creative with the designs.
8- * What is on your Ipod?
Anthony and the johnsons, Anthony is a very dear friend of mine.
9- * Your designs for women are amazing. Do you have plans to ever create a collection for Men?
At this stage no, I have been approached many times to start a men’s line—but the truth is, the market is just way too small. We do have many designs however that can be considered unisex. For example the gunmetal grater cuff and the rhodium pyramid pin have been popular with our male customers. The next big step will be fine jewelry…it’s an arena I have always wanted to explore.
10- * Utopia is…
Life as I know it. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to do what I love, which is designing… every day!
